STEVE WOZNIAK — A Silicon Valley icon and philanthropist for the past three decades, Steve Wozniak, a.k.a. “The Woz,” helped shape the computer industry with his design of Apples first line of products, the Apple I and II, and influenced the popular Macintosh. After leaving Apple Computer Inc. in 1985, Wozniak was involved in various business and philanthropic ventures, focusing primarily on computer capabilities in schools and stressing hands-on learning and encouraging creativity for students. In 2000, he was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame and was awarded the prestigious Heinz Award for Technology, The Economy and Employment. Wozniak is also a published author with the release of his New York Times Best Selling autobiography, iWoz: From Computer Geek to Cult Icon, in September 2006.

1549 to Tower: ‘We’re Gonna End Up in the Hudson’

This has to be one of the nicest planes pulled out of the Hudson after a crash.  With a little elbow grease it will fly again.

Joby has announced a big, strong, pro version of its Gorillapod, called the Gorillapod Focus. It has the same bendable, prehensile legs as its smaller brothers and weighs in at a similarly lightweight 1.1 pounds, but the Focus can support ten times its own weight: 11 pounds, easily enough to hold a fully loaded DSLR or even a video camera.

The other difference is the head. Instead of a tripod bush, the Focus ships with a 3/8″ adapter screw so you can add your pro-head of choice (the picture shows a ball head). The Focus won’t replace a standard, long-legged tripod in the studio but at $150 it’s a great small and light tripod for the gadget bag. It could also be used as a prop for your YouTube remake of War of the Worlds.

TOKYO (Reuters) — Japan’s Sony Corp will likely suffer an annual operating loss of about $1.1 billion, its first such loss in 14 years, due to sluggish sales and a stronger yen, a person with knowledge of the matter said.

Shares of Sony tumbled 9%, slicing $2 billion off its market value to $22 billion, while rival Toshiba Corp. dropped more than 8% after Japanese media said it too was headed for a big loss this financial year.

The global economic slump has dampened demand for electronics products, causing inventories to pile up and prices to tumble, and Sony (SNE) is feeling the pinch of the downturn in every corner of its operations, which range from semiconductors to movies and insurance.

If it posts such a loss, management could come under pressure to pursue bolder restructuring than the plan unveiled last month that called for curbing investment, exiting businesses and cutting 16,000 jobs. That included 8,000 regular workers, or roughly 4% of its global workforce.

“I think there’s a good chance the company will further accelerate its restructuring from what has been announced in December,” said Daiwa Institute of Research analyst Kazuharu Miura.
